The Mooresville Friends Academy was constructed in 1861 as one of Indiana’s first high schools. Many central Indiana students of all grades attended the school through 1971. In 1975, it was placed on the state and National Registers of Historic Places.
Today three of the five historical buildings on the Newby Campus remain – Newby Memorial Elementary School, the Academy Building and the Newby Gym (or “Newby Dome”). Newby Memorial Elementary is still used by local students in kindergarten through sixth grade and Newby Gym functions as the home of local junior basketball leagues.
In 2000, the Academy Building was restored and re-dedicated with a grant from Eli Lilly and donations from the community.
Today, the Academy of Hoosier Heritage museum operates upstairs and shows exhibitions of Mooresville and Indiana history. The museum also exhibits a full-size historical classroom complete with antique desks, books and toys.
The Academy of Hoosier Heritage is open Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., one Saturday per month, and at other times by appointment. The classroom is always open for viewing during those times, but is also available for demonstrations to groups by appointment. For more information on the museum, please visit the Academy of Hoosier Heritage Web site at
www.academymuseum.org.
The Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. office is located downstairs in the back of the Academy Building, behind the Emily Carolyn Mills Room.
The Emily Carolyn Mills Room is used by the foundation, Academy of Hoosier Heritage, and Kendrick Foundation, Inc. boards of directors as well as local quilters. The meeting room is available for community and private use for groups of up to 30 people for a donation of $50. Contact the Community Foundation of Morgan County, Inc. to check availability.
