Purpose: For a student who demonstrates overall academic preparedness, an ability communicate future educational plans and reasoning behind those plans, an ability to adjust to new learning and living environments, and exemplary ethical and moral conduct as it relates to school, fellow students, and faculty.
History: Charles and Olive Flater were married in January of 1895. Charles worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad for many years, retiring in 1938. He was also appointed Brown Township Trustee in 1939 and held that post until 1947. He was a 50-year Mason of the Mooresville F. & A.M. Lodge # 78, and a charter member of the Mooresville Lion’s Club. Olive Flater was a member of the Bay View Club and the Mooresville Women’s Club. Charles and Olive were longtime members of the Mooresville First Methodist Church. They had one child, Hazel Ann Flater, who wrote the “Chit Chat” column in the Martinsville Democrat in the 1960’s. Hazel was a member of the Mooresville First United Methodist Church, Mooresville Eastern Star, Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority, and an honorary member of the Bay View Club. She bequeathed the funds for the scholarship to be established in honor of her parents.
