The memorial will also honor Sammy Davis, a Mooresville High School graduate and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient in 1967 for his heroism in Vietnam. Davis is also well-known as "The Real Forrest Gump" since his military story was the basis for many of Forrest's military experiences in the book and movie.

| Mooresville Veterans Memorial
|
|
Honor, dignity and respect have been earned by those who serve in our nation's military. To salute these heroes, Mooresville citizens are banding together to update the Mooresville Veterans Memorial on the campus of Newby Elementary School. On its 60th anniversary, November 8, 2008, the memorial will be expanded to include Mooresville area-soldiers lost in recent years as well as many other upgrades honoring these patrons.
A "Walk of Freedom" will be created from bricks purchased by the public to honor those who have served in any branch of the military during war or peace. A special section of bricks will also honor those who have supported troops from the home front, such as military families, World War II farmers, and others.
For more information on this special project, please download the brochure at the bottom of this page.
